Squirrels Observation Studies

June 6th, 2026 • By Roland W.

Lately, I have noticed an increase in squirrels in Irvine. Almost every day, walking to school, I see another one twitching in the grass, sprinting across the sidewalk, hopping along tree branches, or perched on the edge of a fence, nibbling a nut. More than once, several squirrels have darted out no more than 2 feet away from me, chasing each other and catching me off guard. I've had a squirrel stop in the middle of the sidewalk and stare into my soul, and I've also had an unusual encounter with an extremely agitated squirrel whom I named Fred. Fred was perched on a tree branch, and as I walked by, he was chattering noisily in my direction. When I moved, he moved to face me.

To me, it seems like squirrels are becoming less and less afraid of people. It makes the morning walk feel a lot more interesting than it used to be. I would stand and watch squirrels hop from branch to branch and dash across the grass, but usually, I need to get to school. But besides their playfulness, squirrels are actually quite interesting. Their eyes cannot tell the difference between a green stem and red petals, and they collect nuts and store them in several different spots around their home. The squirrel then eats the nuts during winter, when food is hard to come by. If a squirrel forgets where they hid an acorn, and the acorn is in the ground, then the seed usually grows into a tree. Squirrels forget about 70% of their stashes, which means that squirrels accidentaly plant millions of trees every year!

So, is it just me, or has anybody else noticed more squirrels in Irvine?

Garden Camera

With the generous support of our teacher and the Garden Club Foundation, we have installed a wildlife camera in the Westpark Elementary school garden. This camera allows us to monitor and record the local critters that visit our habitat. Our observations, dates, and findings are logged below.
